UNBROKEN

UNBROKEN emerges from the observation of a construction site in Stockholm, where an urban area undergoes revitalization and previous structures have been demolished. The site’s material condition—marked by a pile of stones—resonates with the landscapes of destruction produced by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, where entire cities have been reduced to rubble. In Ukraine, however, devastation caused by missile attacks is met not only with loss, but also with practices of repair and mutual support: restoring damaged infrastructure, clearing rubble collectively, and reclaiming destroyed spaces through communal presence. The intervention examines destruction and reconstruction as interdependent conditions through which collective resilience is materially articulated. In the shifting light of the Nordic landscape, the thin metallic foil reflects even minimal illumination, allowing the inscription to emerge through fragments of brightness. Rather than concealing the stones’ fractured surfaces, the material activates them as a reflective field, transforming rubble into a surface where resilience becomes visible.
