WHERE THERE IS POWER, THERE IS RESISTANCE
The work draws on Michel Foucault’s statement “Where there is power, there is resistance,” placing it within the confined passage of a pedestrian and cycling tunnel in Stockholm. In this enclosed space of everyday movement, the phrase directly addresses passers-by and invites reflection on personal, collective, and political forms of resistance. Before installing the tape inscription, the artist spent five hours cleaning the tunnel surface while wearing a high-visibility orange work vest. The gesture was repeatedly read as urban maintenance, exposing how visual codes of labour and authority can temporarily legitimize an otherwise unauthorized intervention. In a city marked by strict regulation and low tolerance toward unauthorized inscriptions, the work’s persistence became part of its meaning. Remaining on the tunnel wall for almost a year, the statement was repeatedly left intact while city workers removed graffiti over and around it. A message of resistance was thus preserved by the very structures of order and regulation it addressed.
